WALKERSVILLE, Md.—Walkersville Lions’ boys’ and Boonsboro’s Lady Warriors won the 51st annual Talley-Zimmerman Track and Field Invitational Saturday April 23, 2011.

Despite a cloudy and rainy start, several high school boys and girls teams from Frederick, Washington, Howard and Cecil Counties started the day with successes in field action.

Crystal Yullie from Urbana took third place in the girls discus with a throw of 95-3 feet. Century’s Kelsey Capparelli took second place with 97-1 feet while Boonsboro senior Becky Young won with a throw of 106-2 feet.

“I have a really great coach,” Young said, “Last year, I started half way through the season (of my junior year). I’ve been doing better and better, and I have confidence that I’ll place well (at this meet).”

In the boys’ discus, Century’s Fitch Giovanni won with a throw of 128-7 feet. Liberty’s Rob Pangborn claimed second place with a throw of 125-9 feet, and Boonsboro’s John “J.R.” Lowery placed third with a throw of 121-6 feet.
Lowery won the boys’ shot put with a throw of 50-11 feet. Lowery said that he thought his throwing performance in the shot put was “okay.” “I think [my performance] was average for a day like this,” Lowery said. Lowery had set high expectations prior to his high school career.

“I started [competing] with USA Track and Field at eight years old,” Lowery said. When asked whether he would like to further his participation after high school track and field, Lowery said, “Yes, I’d like to compete in college.”

Lowery also participated in the 4x100m throwers’ relay as Boonsboro won the race. “Last year, it was our first time running that race,” Lowery said, “I think we ran pretty fast.”

Senior Coby Gussio won the boys’ long jump with a leap of 21-4 feet. Gussio said that he was not satisfied.
“I completed two of four attempts before I had to run the 400 meter dash today, and I am not happy with that jump,” Gussio said.

“I jumped 22-10.5 feet last time at a dual meet with North Hagerstown [High School].” Gussio said that he credits his jumping coach Sarah Harris with his success.

Gussio is currently ranked first in the Tri-State area and second overall in the state of Maryland.

“I’m trying to get into the 23 [feet range] at this point.”

Gussio signed a NCAA National Letter of Intent earlier this year with Mount Saint Mary’s University.

Walkersville’s senior Nick Bowen won the Don Boyer pole vault award for the Lions with a leap of 13-0 feet.

“I was not happy,” Bowen said, “I was hoping to go 14 feet. I would like to be a (Md.) state champion. Practice makes perfect. It’s just [about] dedication.”

On the girls’ side, River Hill’s Kelly Davis won the pole vault award with a leap of 9 feet, 8 inches.

On the track, Boonsboro’s Lady Warriors dominated the field of competitors with five wins: the 100m dash, 100m hurdles, 200m dash, the 4x200m and 4x100m relays. Sophomore Abby Duncan led the Lady Warriors in four of those five events.

Previously, Duncan broke the Tri-State area record in the 400 and in national competition. Last year, Duncan won two state titles in the 100 and 200, and placed second in the 400 at the State meet. Duncan’s personal best in the 400m dash is 56.85 seconds.

“Track’s awesome,” Duncan said, “I came into the program not knowing which spring sport to participate in as a freshman.” Duncan said that she started playing soccer at the age of three.

Senior Maura Linde received both the James “Humpty” Gilbert 1500m award and the Jim Fraser 800m award. Linde won the 1500 with a time of 4:51.62 and the 800 with a time of 2:21.42.

“I felt good,” Linde said, after completing the 1500, “It was kind of chilly. I was just cold.” Linde competed for the Knights in the 4x800m relay prior to the 1500. “The 4x800m relay really helped me out.”

“I’m so grateful for my coach. He sees a lot of potential in me.”

Linde has committed herself to Syracuse University for the 2011-12 school year.

Linde was joined by fellow senior teammate Rachel Larkin. Larkin finished third with a time of 2:26.52.

“Luckily, the weather cleared up for us,” Larkin said, “I just had to help my teammate.”

“We wanted to stick together. We didn’t have much of a plan [going into the 800],” Linde said.

The Guy Whidden girl’s 3000m Award was won by Liberty’s Casey Sullivan. Sullivan ran a time of 11:00.87. Walkersville’s Megan Kaczor took second place with a time of 11:09. 45. Boonsboro’s sophomore Sarah Zielinski took third place with a time of 11:13.49.

Kaczor was seeded ninth going into the 3000. “I needed that,” Kaczor said about her 3000m performance.

“I felt good. I tend to run better in the rain.”

Zielinski was seeded second behind winner Sullivan in the 3000. “The 3200 is my favorite [race],” Zielinkski said. When asked about desires to compete in college, Zielinski said, “I’d like to run the 5000. That would be interesting.” Zielinski also took sixth place in the 1500m run.

In team points, Boonsboro girls won with 128.5 points, scoring 20 points ahead of Liberty, who took second place with 108.5 points. Century’s Lady Knights took home the bronze with 101 points.

Walkersville’s boys’ team won with 100 points. Williamsport’s Wildcats took second place ahead of Urbana with 97 points while the Hawks finished third with 89 points. A total of 11 girls and 12 boys teams competed.
