LANDOVER, Md., Feb. 22 – Throughout the snow-shortened indoor track season, spectators and fellow athletes alike questioned where Smithsburg High School senior David Wilson was.

Wilson was faithfully at the track each meet. But he wasn’t competing.

Turns out, it was all part of a master plan between himself, personal coach Mike Spinnler and Leopards head coach Ray Shriver. And the plan worked just fine.

Wilson dominated the 3,200 meter run on Monday during the Class 1A high school track and field championship at Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex in Landover. He finished the 16-lap race around the 200-meter oval in a Class 1A record 9 minutes, 31.42 seconds.

Williamsport sophomore Evan Hardy was a distance second in 10:19.43 and Bohemia Manor senior Nick Hanifee took third in 10:34.57. Boonsboro junior Evan Moser (10:42.23) and Bohemia Manor sophomre Ryan Pfarr (10;52.23) rounded out the top five finishers.

The previous Class 1A mark of 9:49.5 was set in 2001 by Jon Goldsmith of Glenelg.

Coming into the race, Wilson had competed only three times during the indoor season – in the championship contests of Washington County, MVAL-Antietam and Class 1A West Region.  Wilson laced up his racing flats for easy wins each time.

As each of those three races, Wilson’s personal drive helped him lead wire to wire.

“It’s a slight disadvantage having to pass people,” Wilson said of the tight confines of the indoor oval. “But going into a lap, I see somebody ahead on the curve … and they pull me ahead.”

Soon enough, that lapped competitor is in Wilson’s rearview mirror.

“It’s probably more of a benefit than a disadvantage,” Wilson said.

The competition, such as it was, helped Wilson to a plan-perfect 4:47.94 mark through the first eight laps. His goal? 4:48.

The plan for the indoor track season started shortly before his two-week break that followed the fall cross country season. Wilson said the goal this winter was to maintain higher mileage – he regularly hit 60-plus miles per week until the snow reduced a portion of his training to a stationary bike. It’s because of that, Wilson said, that Spinnler didn’t want the Syracuse-bound senior to race in anything but the longest distance available.

“The 3,200 is the slowest event out there, pace-wise,” Wilson said. “Even though it’s longer, I’m doing longer mileage anyway.”

The racing fit in well with his training.

“Everything went according to plan,” Wilson said. “I’m pretty happy with it.”

Track fans will see a natural transition to the outdoor season, the beginning of which is only a week away. Wilson said he’ll be racing almost exclusively in the 1,600 and 800 runs – bypassing the longer 3,200 run altogether.

The plan? To get fast.

“I think the plan right now is to double-up in the state meet,” Wilson said. “Other than that, I’ll be running mostly” shorter races.
