Fenton, Stick ring in New Year with victories
Stick wraps up a decade of wins with record time

WINFIELD, Md., Jan. 1 -- Century High School junior Ryan Fenton and former Salisbury State University standout Sherry Stick (nee Esposito) posted wins on New Year's Day after crossing the finish line of the annual Winfield Mile in southern Carroll County.
Fenton led a pack of six, including Stick, through the halfway mark but pulled away from Taylor Smith, Victor Cretella and Jimmy Filomena in the second half-mile of the straight, asphalt course that parallels state Route 26.
Fenton finished with a time of 4 minutes and 48 seconds. Smith was second in 4:42 while Frederick resident Victor Cretella, 39, edged 16-year-old Filomena for third (4:54 to 4:56). Cretella won the 2008 event.
Tadd Morris, 42, was the top male masters and finished fifth overall in 5:00, two seconds ahead of Stick. Competing for the Baltimore-Washington Athletic Club, Stick, of Eldersburg, is generally perceived has the race favorite and for good reason: the 31-year-old has won the event in each of the past nine efforts dating back to 2002, the furthest online records of the Westminster Road Runners Club has posted online.

During Stick's streak, she has never finished lower than 10th in the overall standings - she was sixth on Friday - and and placed inside the top seven a total of five times, including a third-place finish in 5:04. Stick's time also set the women's course record - the one she set in 2005 and tied in 2006.
Casey Sullivan, of Liberty High School, placed second in the female standings with a time of 5:57. She beat out Lions teammate Michele Lambert, 17, who finished in 6:06.
Stacey Hertz, 44, was the first woman in the 40-to-49 division to cross the finish line in 8:00. Dee Nelson, 66 - who was running in her second race of the day after having won a 5K in Gaithersburg - finished 41st overall in 7:26. Peter Blank, 55, placed 23rd overall and won the male grandmasters division with a time of 6:20.

Kim de Benedictis, 15, edges Carroll County Public Schools Director of Athletics Jim Rodriguez for 26th place. Both shared a time of 6:34.
